The government of Ontario is leading a pilot project to study the economic viability of a Basic Income model. A guaranteed or basic income can take different forms but is essentially understood to ensure everyone an income that is sufficient to meet their basic needs and live with dignity, regardless of work status. Political positions and policies, such as Basic Income, are advised by economic realities, but they also need to reflect a vision of what constitutes a common good and on a principled understanding of the relationship and responsibilities between an individual and society.
It is our suggestion that religious traditions can play a unique role in forming individuals and modeling forms of community that take seriously a commitment to social transformation and respect for human dignity.
